An open invitation to Arthur Brown

  • Published Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at 12:08 a.m.

Dear Arthur,

Let's talk.

I know that might be hard because you're not really talking right now, or you're kind of hard to find, or you're driving back from Florida or whatever... but I think a sitdown at your hometown paper should be your first stop on the way back to being what you always thought you were going to be.

That is, a great linebacker. And I still think you can be one.

I just have so many questions about how you plan on doing that.

Here's how this can go: You just e-mail me or call me (the info is right above), and then we meet. Come up to the newspaper and we can even take some up-to-date pictures of you. You're like Bigfoot right now, man. Nobody from around these parts has heard from you.

You left our little hamlet and cut out for southern Florida and that was it. We don't get FSN Florida or ESPN9 or whatever televison station most of your games have been on for the last couple of seasons out here, my brother.

And even when your games were on national television... well, you know. And that leads me to my next point.

What happened with all of that?

Twenty-four tackles in two years? What was that like for you? The top linebacker recruit in the country isn't supposed to get 24 tackles in two years, no way, no how.

Not the guy Bob Stoops thought would win the Butkus Award twice. Not the guy who Pete Carroll said was the best linebacker prospect he'd seen in almost a decade.

And I think even you would admit as much — your reputation as a straight shooter and an honest interview precedes you.

And while we might talk about the past a little (we'll start with why in the world you didn't redshirt), we're going to focus mainly on the future.

To be more specific: Where are you going to go to school at next? Do you have a top five? Do you realize that when you get back to playing, because unless you go Division II you'll have to sit out a year, that you'll have not had meaningful gametime action in over three years?

And, of course, I'll ask the (maybe literally) Million-Dollar Question: Is there any chance on heaven and earth you'll end up a Jayhawk or a Wildcat?

Hopefully by now you get the gist of what I'm trying to do here. Straight Q and A. I ask, you talk, I listen. Go as long as you want or as short as you want.

Heck, I'll even do it on my day off.

Sincerely,

Tony
