how to find a tutor

  • Published Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at 12:07 a.m.

If your child is struggling or falling behind in school, you might consider a tutor. Services, approaches and costs vary, so it's best to call around and find what works for your child. Some options:

* The Wichita school district keeps a list of certified current and former teachers who offer tutoring services in their off hours. Call Debi Corrigan, 316-973-5159. This is a referral service only; all arrangements and fees are set directly between the client and tutor.

* Many Wichita State University students also offer tutoring services, says Melinda Ware, an official at WSU's Counseling and Testing Center, but there is no official clearinghouse for that information. Ware suggests calling the specific school or department — the chemistry department if your child needs help in chemistry, for example — and asking whether they know of any graduate students who tutor. For a list of phone numbers by department, go to www.wichita.edu and search for "colleges and schools" in the upper right corner.

* Some local high school students tutor younger students for pay or as volunteers. Check at a high school.

There are several private tutoring services and learning centers in the Wichita area. Here are some:

* Academic Tutors Unlimited Inc., 316-683-0627

* Club Z In-Home Tutoring Services, 316-681-0600, or www.clubztutoring.com.

* FUNdamental Learning Center, 316-684-7323

* Reach Learning Center, 316-773-7324

* Sylvan Learning Center, 316-721-0196 (west side) or 316-681-2880 (east side)

* Tozer Tutoring, 316-300-9673, or www.tozertutoring.com
