Bombardier Aerospace's aircraft deliveries for the past year declined 13.5 percent in the past year but beat analyst expectations.

Orders, meanwhile, were soft.

The company announced Friday that it delivered 302 aircraft during its 2009 fiscal year, which ended Jan. 31. That's down from 349 a year earlier.

Deliveries of Wichita-built Learjets declined 37 percent during same time. The company delivered 44 Learjets compared with 70 a year ago.

In all, Bombardier delivered 176 business aircraft, a 25 percent drop from 235.

Bombardier delivered 14 more business jets, two more commercial planes and two more amphibious aircraft than expected, UBS analyst Fadi Chamoun wrote in a note to clients.

This year, Bombardier expects business jet deliveries to drop 15 percent to about 150 aircraft and commercial aircraft deliveries to drop 20 percent.

After cancellations, Bombardier netted 11 aircraft orders during the year compared with 367 in the past year.

Cancellations for business aircraft in 2009 outnumbered new orders.

"While indicators of market stabilization have started to emerge, we remain cautious as economic uncertainty still prevails," Bombardier Aerospace president and chief operating officer Guy Hachey said in a statement.

The company worked to strengthen its operations and invest in future programs, Hachey said.

In Wichita, the company focused on improving the customer delivery process, its operational business and customer support, said David Coleal, vice president and general manager of Bombardier's Learjet facility here.

"We're very pleased with that," Coleal said.

The plant, which has 2,534 employees, has aligned its production rates for the year.

The company lost an order for 25 Learjet 60XR business jets after Jet Republic suspended operations in September.

"We adjusted accordingly," Coleal said. "We made our adjustments last year going into this year."

The Wichita site is also working "full bore" on the new Learjet 85 business jet.

"We're very excited about how that's progressing," Coleal said.
