In bloom at Botanica: firecracker plant

Botanical name: Crossandra species

Location: Greenhouse (for the winter)

Description: An annual that gets its firecracker name for bright yellow-orange flowers that follow one after another in a continuous show. Reaches a mature height of 1 to 3 feet.

Growth tips: When outside, this plant performs best with protection from the hot afternoon sun. When inside, it needs a bright spot with partial to full sun. Best in any well-drained soil or potting mix. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but do not over-water.

History: Displayed at Botanica since 2004.

Uses: An outstanding patio specimen during the growing season. Good houseplant or greenhouse plant during the winter, or year-round.

Also of interest: ornamental grasses, evergreens and greenhouse plants.
