Only 11 purebred dogs are left at the Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton after the shelter last week took in 42 dogs seized from a breeder.

Breeds still available for adoption include fox terrier puppies, American Eskimo, long-haired Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pekingese, schnauzer and shih tzu.

The shelter houses 50 dogs comfortably, and the foster homes were full by taking on the 42 of 111 dogs taken from a licensed breeder cited for problems with sanitation and crowding.

Caring Hands was counting on adopting out the purebred puppies and adult dogs quickly, or the shelter might not have been able to handle another influx of dogs, spokesman Jack Brand said.

Online adoption applications were re-enabled today after being disabled when staff found they couldn't keep up with the response. Applications submitted in person at Caring Hands have priority, Brand stated in a news release.

He said the shelter is expecting more American Eskimo dogs soon.
