"The Committee to Save the World" by Robert Day (Western Press, 174 pages, $16.95 paper)
From the author of "The Last Cattle Drive" comes this collection of essays, which offer Robert Day's take on Kansas, politics, baseball, making movies (or not), and more philosophical topics such as truth and the nature of knowledge and ignorance.
Some are taken from the pieces he wrote for the Washington Post magazine; a couple are about "The Last Cattle Drive," including a funny, entertaining piece about the ultimately unsuccessful efforts to film that novel; a few are personal; and the last bunch come out of his work as a member of the Prairie Writers Circle.
Each one is a joy to read, from Day's trenchant observations on rural life to his sincere, personal tribute to a past teacher. Interspersed in the volume — in color — are Kathryn Jankus Day's delightful bovine-centric paintings, which serve as the perfect complement to the writing.
