Botanical name: Stromanthe sanguinea "Tricolor"

Location: Greenhouse

Description: Tropical plant known for its dramatic creamy white and green foliage. The underside of the glossy leaves is a striking burgundy-pink for an exotic contrast. The leaves are 4 inches wide and are arranged in fans. Grows 12 to 18 inches high and 18 to 24 inches wide.

Growing tips: In our zone, this plant is an annual/houseplant. Grows best in rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade. Requires evenly moist soil. Allow soil to dry out slightly between watering sessions, then water moderately. Mist when the leaves appear dry.

History: Grown at Botanica since 2004.

Uses: Great specimen for a container and on a shaded deck or patio garden. Can be used as a bedding plant in the shade garden and can also be an attractive houseplant if given the proper conditions.

Also of interest in the gardens: pansies, hollies, junipers, pines.
