Kanai open: After much anticipation, the west side's new upscale sushi restaurant opened last weekend. It's at 12111 Maple (316-719-2929) in the same strip center as Shorty Small's and is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and Sundays and from 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Burger Barn about to open:
Husband and wife Bill and Cheryl Powell planned to open on Thursday The Burger Barn at 3302 W. Central (316-425-0443). The tiny restaurant, with seating for 14 and a drive-through for to-go diners, will serve burgers, hand-breaded chicken-fried steaks, fish sandwiches, BLTs, onion rings, cobbler, tacos and more. Hours will be 11 am. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11:30 to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Maharaja Cuisine of India, which opened at 1701 N. Broadway last year, is moving to 3008 W. Central where New York Cafe once was. The move should happen in late February.
Kobe Steakhouse of Japan will close its original location at 650 N. Carriage Parkway in late February and plans to open a new location at 1221 N. Rock Road in Derby in early March.
A GOOD DEAL
Neighbors, the bar and grill at 2150 N. Amidon, earlier this week decided to eliminate smoking in the restaurant. Neighbors, known for its fried chicken and burgers, also offers a popular steak special from 4 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, when ribeyes, filets and sirloins are sold for $8.45. The steaks come with potato, vegetable and a salad. For more information, call 316-838-1338.
QUICK BITES
Red Gems wine dinner
Oeno Wine Bar at 330 N. Mead is putting on a dinner on Jan. 30 that will cost $30 a person and will pair three red wines with four food courses. An example of one course: a pesto roasted chicken breast with red pepper goat cheese ravioli paired with a High Note Malbec. The dinner begins at 7 p.m. Advance credit card reservations are required by calling 316-440-5000.
P.F. correction
P.F. Chang's new happy hour, which we wrote about in this column last week, is not offered in Kansas because of liquor laws. But the restaurant said it is working on its own happy hour menu that will include food items.
