Eby Construction eliminates positions

Eby Construction Co. said today it has eliminated eight salaried staff positions and announced the resignation of a senior manager.

Joe Levens, the company's senior vice president of corporate development, resigned today, and the eight lower- and middle-management positions were eliminated as private projects dry up in the credit crunch, company officials said.

Meanwhile, the competition for public projects is intense as construction firms scramble for work.

"We've continued to see a tight market for construction, and backlogs for contracting firms around the region are not at the levels we'd enjoy," said Mike Grier, the company's president and CEO.

Levens' position was eliminated as well, Grier said, as the company responds to several completed prospects and a light future work schedule.

Business development responsibilities will be assumed by other officers in the organization, Grier said.

"We continue to see the market being very difficult with the lack of privately funded projects and banking restrictions for developers," Grier said.

"What we see is a limited amount of private work to bid and a large list of contractors competing for the public market."

With the layoffs, Eby now employs 123, Grier said.

The company performs general contracting, construction management at risk and design build construction services for the manufacturing, education, commercial and medical industries in Wichita and the central United States.
