A male Missouri State fan shoved Wichita State basketball player Toure Murry during Wednesday night's game in Springfield.

The play happened early in the second half after a steal by Murry. He drove to the basket and was fouled on the end of the court where MSU students sit. The fan gave Murry a two-handed shove to the chest, staggering Murry and knocking him into some Bears cheerleaders.

"My momentum carried me into the stands a little bit," Murry said. "A fan approached me and pushed me. It wasn't too major."

WSU coach Gregg Marshall took it a little more seriously, wondering if the reaction would have differed if a Shocker fan got physical with a visiting player. He said he told referees about the incident, but was not aware if the fan was removed from the game.

"If that had happened at our place... "he said.

Missouri State athletic director Kyle Moats and WSU athletic director Eric Sexton discussed the incident on Thursday.

"Missouri State is investigating the incident internally and will take the appropriate steps based on that investigation," assistant athletic director Rick Kindhart said.

Sexton did not see the incident at the game. He said he later watched a replay and described the shove as Murry did. Murry, after the shove, made two free throws to give WSU a 41-18 lead in a game it won 65-62 at JQH Arena.

"I'm really proud and pleased that Toure handled the situation in a first-class way," Sexton said. "That reflects well on Toure and the way coach Gregg Marshall runs his program."

Murry said he walked away from the confrontation, went to line and forgot about it.

"It could have been dangerous, if I was an aggressive player and I did something back," he said. "Other players get suspended and I don't want to cause that for the team. That could have been ugly."

Sexton said he was unsure if the fan was ejected. In the aftermath, he is pleased with MSU's response to the seriousness of the situation.

"I know Missouri State is very supportive of the sportsmanship code of the Missouri Valley Conference and will follow up in accordance," Sexton said.
