Once a giver, now she's in needBY COURTNEY LOONEY
The Wichita Eagle
Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.
She donated money to Share the Season in the past. Now she is asking for help.
I never thought Id ever be in need myself, she wrote in her application.
The 62-year-old woman has suffered from health problems. She has no family to turn to.
These last few months have been a struggle living alone with no one to help, no one to even talk to, she wrote. I feel so emotionally and physically drained. I know this has affected my thinking.
The woman is diabetic and has end-stage renal disease. She receives dialysis three times a week and has been on Social Security disability since 1999. A fall in her kitchen in 2008 caused a severe head injury that required four months of rehabilitation.
With all my medical problems, I have still been able to live and care for myself, she wrote. (But) I struggle each month to make it financially.
Because of her health problems, she did not track her finances closely enough. Now her bank account is significantly overdrawn.
I have to admit I am really scared the more I try to think about how I will get out of this mess I have created, she wrote. It seems so hopeless.
If you could find it in your heart to help me just this once, I know I will get back on my feet and will be able to be back on the giving end once again, she wrote.
