KANSAS CITY, Mo. —When this wretched season is mercifully finished, the Chiefs won't need to watch video of every snap to relive their offensive futility.
They can merely review the final eight minutes of Sunday's 16-10 loss to Buffalo at Arrowhead Stadium. Even in that short time span, the Chiefs committed almost every offensive sin imaginable: two big dropped passes, two interceptions, two holding penalties and three receivers failing to get out of bounds when the Chiefs were desperate to save time.
Every one was a factor in the defeat.
The Chiefs also made some big plays late and almost overtook the Bills. But in the end, those mistakes combined with two previous Matt Cassel interceptions — he has eight turnovers in the last three games — were enough to drop them to 3-10.
The previously reliable Chris Chambers was among the perpetrators. He dropped a pass on the Buffalo 3-yard-line with just more than two minutes remaining.
Chambers might have scored a touchdown had he made the catch. At worst, the Chiefs would have had four shots from inside the Buffalo 5 for the go-ahead touchdown.
Instead, he merely padded Kansas City's league-leading total in dropped passes.
"I beat the guy really good," Chambers said, offering no excuses. "I turned my head a little late, and the ball was kind of on me, low. I made a good effort to try to scoop it up, and I didn't reel it in. I've made that play plenty of times before when the ball was on my hands. It was a little low, but it's a play I definitely can make and I probably would have been able to score.
"I definitely let the team down on that play. I know one play doesn't dictate the whole game, but that was a huge play, one I pride myself on."
Chambers also failed to make a more difficult play early in the fourth quarter when he dived for a pass and deflected it to Buffalo linebacker Paul Posluszny The game also continued the disintegration of Cassel's season. Until recently, Cassel had been doing a remarkable job of protecting the ball given the Chiefs' many offensive shortcomings.
But he opened the second half by forcing a throw that was intercepted.
"Obviously, I'd like to have that one back," he said. "Dumb play by me."
He had some other hiccups. Cassel had Mark Bradley open beyond the Buffalo defense twice but each time put the ball beyond the receiver's reach.
The Chiefs' last three possessions ended with interceptions. Two — including the Chambers play — were tipped balls, and one came in the end zone on a desperation heave on the game's final play.
Cassel went without a touchdown pass Sunday, so he now has 13 interceptions to go with his 13 TD passes.
"I've been pretty clear that when an interception happens, there are a lot of different factors that are involved," Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. "When two of them are tipped and one hits the receiver in the hands and is tipped up to the defense, (it means) there are a lot of factors involved."
Haley inserted 6-foot-7 tight end Brad Cottam, not usually a pass receiver, into the game for the final play because of his height. Haley said Cottam was interfered with and the Chiefs should have been given another play from Buffalo's 1.
"It appeared that Cottam was either tripped or knocked down," Haley said. "He's in there for that reason."
Leonard Pope, Jamaal Charles and Chambers each caught a pass on Kansas City's final drive, but none managed to get out of bounds. By that point, the Chiefs had used their timeouts and had less than a minute in which to move for what would have been the winning touchdown.
"We've got to be a little smarter and get out of bounds in that 2-minute situation," Haley said. "Time is more critical than yardage in those situations."
