A trial date has been set for a Wichita day care owner who faces charges of driving children while intoxicated.

The trial for Margaret E. Self, 49, of Derby, is set for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 19, according to municipal court officials.

Self, also known as Margaret E. Walker, has entered a plea of not guilty on seven charges related to an incident in October in which her day care employees said they suspected Self was drunk when she drove off with seven children. Employees said they tried to stop her and then called police.

No injuries were reported.

Charges include driving under the influence, DUI resulting in child endangerment, improper child restraint and no valid driver's license.

Self is charged with second-offense DUI because she was convicted of a DUI in February in Butler County. That incident didn't involve children, according to court records.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued an emergency order Oct. 23 to suspend the license of the day care, Creative Connections Learning Center, the day Self was arrested. The business, near Central and 119th Street West, has been closed since.

The health department first threatened to suspend the day care's license in July, after an annual inspection found violations.

Self and her husband, Michael N. Walker, had a tax warrant as of Nov. 19 for $2,430 on the day care, according to Sedgwick County records.
