Koby and Magavin Carroll staked out spots beside adjacent urinals Saturday in men's bathroom No. 18 on Level 3 of the Intrust Bank Arena.
Their mission: To join with 300 other scouts and simultaneously flush every public toilet in the soon-to-be opened building.
Koby, 10, and Magavin, 8, quickly picked up the fact that the tiny red lights next to urinals were the keys to the automatic flushers.
"It blinks," Koby said as he held his hand near the light. "It's a motion sensor. Once you take your hand away, it flushes."
The public address announcer went over the rules for what arena officials were billing the "Royal Flush."
"There are four sections: A, B, C and D," the announcer said. "In just a few minutes, I'm going to warn Group A to get ready to flush. When I say the magic word, 'Flush,' flush your toilets."
Koby and Magavin, who live in Andover, were in Group A.
Chris Presson, general manager of the arena, said the building has more than 300 toilets and urinals.
He said the purpose of the Royal Flush was "just to test the system, to make sure everything is functional and operational."
He said the promotion also was a way to get Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups — and their parents — introduced to the arena.
"We're an unknown commodity," he said. "We want to weave our way into the community, and this is one way to do it."
For the record, men's bathroom No. 18 has 14 urinals, four stalls with standard toilets, six sinks and a Koala Kare baby changing station.
"We're counting down to one minute," the announcer said. "Volunteers, make sure all the kids are prepared."
"Stay back, Jared," one of the parent volunteers said
"Gavin, back up a little bit," said another.
"All right, everybody, it's that time," the announcer said. "Group A, prepare yourselves. Go ahead and get in front of your toilets.
"10... 9... 8.. 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Flush!"
Water surged through every urinal, toilet and sink in the room. Not a single pipe burst. No toilets overflowed. The room roared with cheers and applause as the announcer started the countdown for Group B.
After the big flush, the scouts and scout leaders were treated to hot dogs and pop.
Koby's impression of the arena?
"Big and cool," he said.
His thoughts on the Royal Flush?
"It's fun," he said. "It's fun to be the first one to flush."
