Doughnut shop to go in on West Central

  • Published Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at 12:06 a.m.

Retired AT&T worker Steve Trask is bringing a bit of paradise to Wichita.

Paradise Donuts, that is.

"Well, I like doughnuts," Trask says of his decision to bring the Oklahoma-based franchise here.

"I knew I wanted to do a doughnut shop, and they seemed to be the ones that would best fit," Trask says.

The store will be in the former Millers Cleaners site at 3107 W. Central.

Initially, Paradise will open in the mornings with doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters and an array of heartier breakfast fare.

"We're known for our sausage rolls and some of the other breakfast items, such as biscuits and gravy," says Derrick Lepper , sales manager for the chain.

"We're more than doughnuts, but we made our fame in the doughnut arena."

The chain started in Missouri in 1967 and moved to Catoosa, Okla., in 2001.

There are 94 stores, mostly in the Midwest. This is the first one in Kansas.

"If the people around there like them, I'm sure we'll expand," Lepper says.

Trask hoped to open Paradise by the end of the year, but he says January is now looking more likely.

Soon after opening, Trask plans to add lunch.

"I'm seriously considering 24 hours," he says. But he adds, "At this point, I just want to get the place open and get going."

Parking it east

Bankruptcy attorney Mark Lazzo is moving his firm from Second and Market downtown to the east side.

"Parking's difficult down here, and traffic's difficult," he says. "It's more convenient for clients to be on the outskirts and be able to roll up doorside."

His new space will be at Landmark Office Park at 3500 N. Rock Road.

"I need more room," says Lazzo, who is a co-owner in the 3,700-square-foot building where he currently has 1,000 square feet.

His new space, where he's moving next week, is 1,650 square feet.

Brent Stewart of J.P. Weigand & Sons represented Lazzo in the deal. Calvin Klaassen of Utter Commercial Real Estate handled it for Landmark.

Lazzo says he'll miss his friends in the building where he is now, and he'll particularly miss the closeness of the courthouse.

"I've been downtown since I became an attorney 23 years ago," he says. "It'll be a change, but I'm looking forward to it."
