Look to shoot
Graham Hatchs reputation as a hustler and defender is solid. He went into Tuesdays game looking to be more aggressive on offense.
Much to Iowas regret, he did just that in the first half.
Definitely, my shot was going, Hatch said. I dont know if I was a little timid last game on my offense, but I need to be more of a threat.
Hatch scored 13 of his career-high 14 points in the first half. He made all three of his threes in 16 first-half minutes.
On two of them, WSU made Iowa pay for playing off Hatch to help in the post. Hatch made threes on passes out of the post from J.T. Durley and Gabe Blair.
Hatch failed to score in Mondays loss to Pittsburgh.
Stay in front
Iowas drive-and-kick offense got the better of WSU in the first four minutes of the game. The Hawkeye took a 12-7 lead by making uncontested jumpers.
We certainly did not defend very well in the first four minutes, WSU coach Gregg Marshall said.
After a timeout, the Shockers tightened up their defense. Hatch knocked the ball away from Matt Gatens and drew a foul diving for the loose ball. A Hatch steal led to an offensive rebound for Gabe Blair to give WSU a 15-12 lead. After Gatens walked, Garrett Stutz made a three for a 20-14 lead.
Iowa didnt make a field goal for 4:24 in the half, allowing WSU to build a 25-16 lead.
We wanted to fight over screens and make them shoot a contested shot, WSU guard Toure Murry said.
WSU did that with some success. Iowa shot 48.6 from the field, but only 27.8 percent from three-point range.
What if we see him
The Shockers are off to Cleveland for Saturdays game against Cleveland State. WSU worked some of coach Gregg Marshalls connections to get practice time at the Cleveland Cavalier facility on Friday.
Clevin Hannah might lose his cool if he sees LeBron James.
I cant even speak, probably, he said. I wouldnt know what to say if I saw LeBron.
Worth noting
WSU evened the series at 4-4. The schools met for the first time since WSUs 60-56 win in the 1981 NCAA Tournament.æ.æ.æ. The Shockers picked up their first win over a Big 10 school since 1988, a 78-68 win over Minnesota.æ.æ.æ. WSU is 28 of 70 (40 percent) from three-point range in four games. It made 32.2 percent last season. The 11 threes WSU made against Iowa topped last seasons high of 10.
