San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum won the NL Cy Young Award, becoming the first repeat winner in the major leagues since Randy Johnson was voted the prize four straight times from 1999-2002. Lincecum led the NL with 261 strikeouts and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts.
* The Wichita Wingnuts announced their 2010 schedule Thursday. The Wingnuts begin the season May 13 with a three-game series at St. Paul, and their home opener is May 18 against Sioux Falls. Wichita will also host the American Association All-Star Game on July 27.
VOLLEYBALL
Corrine Stringer led Pittsburg State with 15 kills and 13 digs as the No. 21 Gorillas upset No. 10 Emporia State 25-15, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional at Warrensburg, Mo. MIAA player of the year Pamela Cartagena added 12 kills for the Gorillas. Arica Shepard led ESU with 19 kills.
* Eighth-seeded Hutchinson Community College lost to Hillsborough 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Tournament at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Blue Dragons will play Spartanburg Methodist at noon today in an elimination match.
BASKETBALL
Logan Stutz led the Washburn men with 12 points and 13 rebounds in a 73-50 win over Saint Mary at Topeka. William McNeill scored a team-high 13 points for the Ichabods.
GOLF
Lorena Ochoa shot a 66 for a 1-shot lead over Reilley Rankin after the first round of the LPGA's season-ending Tour Championship at Richmond, Texas. Michelle Wie, fresh off her first LPGA victory last week, shot a 72, then withdrew from the tournament. She limped through her round on a sprained left ankle that she first injured at the Solheim Cup in August.
SOCCER
Former Wichita Wings captain Kevin Kewley has been hired as the inaugural coach for the Pratt Community College men's team, which will start play in fall 2010. Kewley played for the Wings from 1980 to 1990.
* Los Angeles forward Landon Donovan was named the 2009 MLS most valuable player after helping lead the Galaxy to the MLS Cup for the first time since 2005. Donovan scored 12 goals and had six assists during the regular season, helping the Galaxy rally for the best record in the Western Conference. It is the first time he's won the top award in the MLS.
