Letters to the editor on health reform, terrorist trial, Palin cartoon, Obama's brilliant team

Model reforms on what works best

Other advanced nations aren't stupid or ignorant. There must be some reason they have their type of health care systems, and are healthier overall than we are. They must have at least some good ideas, procedures and practices in areas of financing, administration and delivery of services.

It is my understanding that Taiwan looked at a number of countries to see what worked best, then picked strengths from different systems and established its own health care system. Why can't we do the same? If we are doing so, I have seen no evidence from the White House or Congress. All I see is an attempt at reinventing on one side, and keeping what we have on the other.

It looks like ego, emotion and powerful lobbies are running the show. It seems there is no room for rational thinking in politics at this time in history, and the infighting is choking America.

Trial questions

By now, everyone has been made aware that Attorney General Eric Holder decided to bring five alleged Sept. 11 conspirators incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay to New York City to stand trial in a regular civilian criminal court normally reserved for petty thieves and serial killers.

Question No. 1: If we are at war with terrorists, why isn't there a military criminal court to try these guys, like there was at Nuremberg for the Nazi war masterminds?

Question No. 2: If we are not going to try these alleged war criminals in military court, then are we really at war?

Question No. 3: If we are not at war, then why is it we have young people dying in Afghanistan?

Inquiring minds wish to know these things.

World criminals

Why are the Republicans so worried about using our criminal court system to try the thugs who used passenger aircraft to kill so many on Sept. 11? They do not have the support of any government.

Let's stop calling them terrorists and start calling them criminals of the world.

Let's bring them to our court system, where the world can see what dumb thugs they truly are.

Selective memory

Regarding Clay Bennett's editorial cartoon showing a bookcase full of copies of Sarah Palin's new book in the "self-serving" section (Nov. 15 Opinion): Did Bennett draw a similar cartoon regarding the books of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton or any other liberal politician? If not, Bennett must have selective memory.

Brilliant team

The sheer brilliance of President Obama's economic team, creating multiple initiatives almost simultaneously as it faced the worst economic meltdown in 80 years, takes one's breath away.

Nearly equally breathtaking is the number of Americans who don't seem to grasp the enormity of the threat, both here and abroad, and the extraordinary work and talent it has taken to keep us from spiraling down into an economic black hole.

These real-world problems, complex and profound, have been compounded by a perplexing politics of personal destruction and an entrenched ideology of the status quo.

Curiously, even the benefits of this administration's good work doubtlessly will escape the naysayers' comprehension, too.
