Wichita State freshman Demetric Williams did not practice on Tuesday. A sprained left ankle limited him to light jogging and riding the stationary bike. The sprain is not considered as serious as the one that sidelined him for several days during practice. Williams said he is not sure if we will be able to play in Wednesday's game against Arkansas-Monticello. "We're taking it day by day," he said.
* WSU freshman guard Tyler Richardson will redshirt, coach Gregg Marshall announced after Sunday's game against Fairleigh Dickinson. Richardson, from Huntsville, Ala., played 11 minutes and scored two points in WSU's exhibition game against Newman. He did not play against Fairleigh Dickinson.
* The Newman men's team opened its regular season with a 73-60 win over Tabor in Wichita. Keaton Schultz led the Jets with 16 points.
* Washburn's men's team opened its season with a 71-41 win over Peru State at Topeka. De'Andre Washington led the Ichabods with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Football
The all-KCAC football team was announced Monday, with Ottawa quarterback Ethan Haller picking up offensive player of the year honors and Bethel defensive lineman James McCartney, a Hesston product, repeating as defensive player of the year. Ottawa coach Kent Kessinger was the coach of the year. For the complete list, please see 6B .
* Former Heights High kicker Craig Ratanamorn is one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award. Ratanamorn, a senior at Marshall, is the only semifinalist not to have missed a kick. He's 13 for 13 on field-goal attempts and 24 of 24 on extra-point attempts.
