WICHITA — A federal judge sentenced a former Goddard police officer, accused of sending nude pictures of himself to a woman he arrested, to two years of probation today.
Calvin Schaffer, 44, had pleaded guilty to wire fraud by depriving citizens of honest services.
In his plea, he said that he contacted a woman he had arrested on Feb. 27 under suspicion of drunken driving and suggested he could arrange for charges to be dismissed if she would have sex with him, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
While on duty, Schaffer used a police computer to send e-mails and photographs to the woman in which he appeared nude or partially undressed. The messages went over the Internet through servers in California and Virginia, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
On Monday, when U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown asked Schaffer for comment, he said he was "truly sorry" for the hurt he had caused his family and for the embarrassment he brought to the law enforcement community.
Schaffer will also have to pay a $500 fine.
