Finish strong
During Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall’s first season, the Shockers seemed to give up baskets in the final seconds of the first half about every other game.
Three seasons later, Marshall remembers. So he pointed out the difference it makes when WSU scores that basket. David Kyles, after pushing the ball up from the backcourt, made a baseline jumper at the buzzer to give WSU a 43-26 lead at halftime.
“David Kyles got the ball with four seconds, and made a play,” Marshall said. “Now we have some playmakers that can make plays. You have to have that in this game because at some point whatever you draw up breaks down. You give them a little structure, but the playmakers make it look a lot better.”
Take a look
The evaluation of Wichita State’s freshmen guards is encouraging, yet incomplete after one game.
Demetric Williams started and scored five points with three assists and no turnovers. Two first-half fouls and a sprained left ankle cut his afternoon short. He played 11 minutes. Kenny Manigault played 13 minutes, scored two points and committed three turnovers with two assists.
Both spent time at point guard and shooting guard.
“Demetric Williams looked pretty good when he was out there,” Marshall said.
