Indiana State defeated the Kansas State women's basketball team 77-73 in the season-opener for both teams Saturday in Manhattan.
A poor-shooting first half put the Wildcats in a hole. K-State made 6 of 29 field goal attempts in the first half and trailed 35-21 at the break.
"I was wondering when we were going to bring something effective to the offensive end of the floor for pretty much three quarters of the first half," K-State coach Deb Patterson said. "It took us way too long for us to get on track offensively. I am not sure we ever really put it together compared to the level of the first two exhibition games."
The Wildcats' accuracy improved in the second half, though they shot 35.4 percent (23 of 65) for the game.
Indiana State's Kelsey Luna had no trouble shooting — she made 15 of 21 shots and scored 37 points.
Indiana State was 14-16 last season and finished fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference. Luna is a preseason all-conference pick.
Ashley Sweat and Kari Kincaid scored 16 apiece to lead K-State.
