Local contractors have won two of the first three construction contracts at the $50 million Siemens wind turbine plant in Hutchinson.

Bob Bergkamp Construction of Wichita has won the dirt moving contract. P1 Group has won the mechanical contract. P1 is based in Lawrence but will handle the work out of its Wichita division.

Bergkamp vice president Chris Snook said the competition for the work was tough, and the win welcome.

"It's a big dirt job," he said Friday. "It's important for us going into winter."

The electrical contract went to Amtech Electric of Lexington, Ky. Amtech is expected to hire some local workers.

No dollar amounts were released.

The contacts were awarded this week by general contractor Gray Construction of Louisville, Ky.
