Wichita State senior Clevin Hannah planned to spend his birthday playing basketball on ESPNU against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Instead, Hannah may miss Sunday's game and more. Wichita State's basketball program remained in wait-and-see mode after a conference call with the NCAA on Thursday afternoon.
Hannah, who transferred to WSU from a junior college, was not certified as an amateur with the NCAA before his junior season at WSU. The athletic department's failure to properly register Hannah may cost him as many as three games.
"We spoke about the situation that I was going through, and we're trying to get it resolved the best we way we can," Hannah said. "I gave my take on the story, that I didn't know what was going on."
And for now, Hannah is in limbo.
"We're just waiting to hear back from the NCAA," athletic director Eric Sexton said. "They said they would notify us as soon as they had rendered their decision. I assume it will be soon. I believe we will know before Sunday."
Hannah, a point guard, is practicing while he waits.
"I'm very disappointed about it, because I really didn't know," he said. "I'm just taking it for what it is, day by day, practicing hard and trying to stay in the mode of keep getting the team better."
Hannah did not play in Saturday's exhibition game against Newman. In a news release after the game, Sexton said that Hannah had not violated NCAA amateur rules and called the error a "processing issue" that was out of Hannah's control. The amateur status of baseball player Taylor Gilmore, also a junior-college transfer, is also under review.
"I think it was just an overlooked mistake," Hannah said. "It's going to be OK. We're going to get through it."
It's unclear how the NCAA will treat the exhibition game.
Mississippi State held freshman John Riek out of an exhibition game in hopes of reducing his suspension for an amateurism issue. The NCAA suspended him for nine regular-season games and ignored the exhibition.
The NCAA allowed Kentucky freshman John Wall to sit out an exhibition game as part of his two-game suspension for accepting money from an AAU coach.
NCAA spokesman Bob Williams told the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger that "each case is determined by their merits and these two cases were not the same."

Tickets are $18. They can be purchased during the volleyball matches this weekend. The box office opens at 1 p.m. on Sunday before the 3 p.m. game.
