Washburn senior linebacker Zach Watkins was chosen MIAA defensive player of the year. Watkins led the MIAA with 108 tackles, and was chosen All-MIAA for the third time.

* Navarro (Texas) remained No. 1 and Fort Scott stayed No. 2 in the NJCAA poll. Butler was tied for No. 7 with Arizona Western.

* The Wild indoor team re-signed kicker Dylan Pohlman and signed former Butler and Kansas defensive lineman Greg Nicks.

Volleyball

Friends beat Saint Mary 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) in a KCAC quarterfinal match.

* Tabor senior outside hitter Ashley Cohlmia was chosen KCAC player of the year.

* Hutchinson sophomore middle hitter Debbie Ohl was chosen MVP of the Jayhawk Conference Western Dicision. Cowley freshman Roslandy Acosta was MVP of the East.

Tennis

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nikolay Davydenko won second-round matches at the Paris Masters to stay in contention for the ATP World Tour Finals. Davydenko and Tsonga are among five players who can still qualify for the eight- man, season-ending event in London. Fernando Verdasco, Robin Soderling and Fernando Gonzalez are also in the running to secure the two remaining spots.

Basketball

Friends won its first game of the season, beating Baker 73-60 in Baldwin City. Chris Jackson scored 17 points and Romar Jones had 16 for the Falcons (1-3).

* Chauncey Billups hit the go-ahead free throw with six-tenths of a second left and Denver beat Chicago 90-89 in an NBA game after a potential winning jumper by Brad Miller was overturned following a lengthy replay review.... Dwyane Wade scored 41 points and Miami remained in first place in the Southeast Division with a 90-76 win over the Wizards. Michael Beasley scored 15 points and Mario Chalmers added 13.

* Five Arkansas basketball players have been suspended for their season opener Friday night, including three identified in a rape complaint that did not result in charges. Coach John Pelphrey said guard Marcus Britt was suspended for six games, forward Glenn Bryant two games, and walk-on guard Nick Mason will not dress for games during the fall semester. Those three were identified in a police report as players accused by an 18-year-old of rape. Prosecutors decided against charges.

Hockey

Boston's Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Penguins as Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby was held without a point for the fifth straight NHL game. The Penguins have not scored in 149 minutes, 9 seconds and have lost three straight games.... Mikko Koivu had a goal and two assists as Minnesota ended Toronto's two-game winning streak, 5-2.... Jarome Iginla extended his goal-scoring streak to four games as Calgary beat Montreal 1-0. The Flames have won four straight.

Swimming

Sporting a beard and an old-style swimsuit, Michael Phelps finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet in Stockholm after missing out on two other finals Tuesday. The 24-year-old American, who was competing for the first time since the world championships in August, wore the type of suit that will become the standard next year. Most other swimmers used faster high-tech suits. Tuesday was marked by world records. Jing Zhao of China beat her own world mark in the women's 50-meter backstroke. She timed 25.82 seconds. Felicity Galvez of Australia set a world record in the 100-meter butterfly, clocking 55.46 seconds.

Soccer

U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies has been released from a Washington hospital nearly a month after a car accident. The 23-year-old Davis underwent several surgeries after the Oct. 13 car crash, which killed a 22-year-old passenger. Davies is expected to need six to 12 months to recover, essentially ruling him out for the World Cup, which begins in South Africa in June.
