A 53-year-old woman from south-central Kansas has died from infection with the H1N1 virus, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said today.
Her death brings the total number of deaths from H1N1 in Kansas to 17.
KDHE said the woman had an underlying health condition that put her at greater risk for severe complications from influenza. It did not specify where the woman was from but said south-central Kansas includes Pawnee, Stafford, Reno, Chase, Edwards, Pratt, Kingman, Kiowa, Comanche, Barber, Harper and Cowley counties.
H1N1 rates continue to be high nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with 7.7 percent of all doctor's office visits in the past week being for flu symptoms.
