Gymnastics

Newton High will play host to the state high school girls gymnastics meet at noon Saturday. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for students. Newton is the only south-central Kansas school with competitors.

TENNIS

Wichitan Nick Taylor will be inducted into the USTA Missouri Valley's 2009 Hall of Fame class on Dec. 5 in Overland Park.

Taylor, currently ranked No. 3 in the world by the ITF quadriplegic singles rankings, is the reigning Olympic gold medal doubles champion and holds doubles titles at both the Australian and US Opens. He was also named the USTA's 1999 Wheelchair Player of the Year and is currently an assistant coach for the Wichita State men's team.

SOCCER

Tabor's Jessica Burden was named the KCAC offensive player of the year, McPherson's Andrea Swanson was the goalkeeper of the year and Ottawa's Jessica Burden was the offensive player of the year as the KCAC put out its' men's and women's all- league teams.

McPherson's Tyler Tank was the men's defensive player of the year and teammate Blake Jett was the goalkeeper of the year. Kansas Wesleyan's Arturo Guizar was the offensive player of the year.

FOOTBALL

All-America receiver Dez Bryant has lost his final appeal to be reinstated by the NCAA this season.

Bryant has sat out the last five games for No. 18 Oklahoma State (6-2, 3-1 Big 12) after the school ruled him ineligible for lying to an NCAA investigator looking into Bryant's offseason meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders.

Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. The junior is eligible to enter next year's NFL draft.

BASKETBALL

Luol Deng scored 15 points and helped stop LeBron James on a drive in the final seconds as the Chicago Bulls ended Cleveland's three-game winning streak with an 86-85 win over the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

Derrick Rose had 14 points and 11 assists and John Salmons added 14 points for the Bulls, who handed the Cavs their second loss at home. Cleveland, which lost to Boston in its opener, only lost two regular-season games and went 45-3 at Quicken Loans Arena last season.

James, who led the Cavaliers with 25 points, lost the ball out of bounds with 3.2 seconds to go after powering his way to the basket. He drew contact on the play from both Deng and Joakim Noah but the officials didn't feel he was fouled.

Hockey

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout as Detroit snapped San Jose's six-game winning streak, 2-1.... Patrice Bergeron's goal with 52 seconds left in regulation helped the Bruins avoid a historic third straight shutout, but Michael Cammalleri scored in the shootout to give the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory over Boston. The Bruins had not been shutout in three straight games since they scored just once over five games from Feb. 2-14, 1929.... Raffi Torres scored two second- period goals and Columbus held off Atlanta 4-3. The Thrashers lost for the fourth time in five home games.

BASEBALL

San Francisco Giants star pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former star at the University of Washington was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 about four miles north of the Oregon border on Oct. 30.

An officer approached Lincecum's 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana. Schatzel says Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe.

The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel says police consider that a small amount for personal use.

Lincecum was fined a total of $622 for driving at 74 mph in a 60-mph zone, and for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

* Outfielder Bobby Abreu agreed Thursday to a $19 million, two-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Angels rather than test the free-agent market again.
