On Sunday, a day after Kansas coach Mark Mangino pulled quarterback Todd Reesing in the fourth quarter of KU's 42-21 loss to Texas Tech, Mangino said he had not spoken directly to Reesing about his benching.

"No, he fully understands what his role is," Mangino said. "He's been in meetings with his position coaches and the offensive unit, and I don't really have anything to say to him, because I think he understands clearly what's going on. He'll be fine. We're encouraging him. I think he'll be fine."

Mangino was given an opportunity to cite the groin injury Reesing said he sustained against Colorado as a reason for his recent struggles, but Mangino declined.

"He's been cleared to play," Mangino said. "He told us he's fine to play, so I don't know if it's a factor or not. I don't think so."

* Saturday's KU-Kansas State game in Manhattan will be televised on VERSUS and will kickoff at 11:30 a.m.

Paul Pierce scored 27 points and the Boston Celtics improved to 4-0 with a 97-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.... Dwyane Wade scored 25 points and Udonis Haslem had 19 points and 11 rebounds as Miami improved to 3-0 with a 95-87 win over Chicago.... Jameer Nelson scored 30 points, J.J. Redick had a career-high 27 and Orlando used a season-high 17 3-pointers to beat Toronto 125-116.... Steve Blake scored 18 points and Brandon Roy made a late push to finish with 16, and Portland defeated Oklahoma City 83-74 Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 23 points.

HOCKEY

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for his 150th NHL victory and 21st career shutout, and Marian Gaborik returned from injury and scored for the fourth straight game as the New York Rangers beat the Boston Bruins 1-0.... Kent Huskins and Brad Staubitz scored 1:22 apart in the second period, Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves and San Jose defeated Carolina 5-1.... Washington played much of the game without Alex Ovechkin, who left early in the second period and did not return in a 5-4 overtime loss to Columbus.

ROWING

Kansas took the top four spots in the Second Novice Eight race and the top three spots in the Varsity Eight race at the Frostbite Regatta in Wichita.
