  • Published Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at 12:05 a.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Federal campaign finance reports for the period ended Sept. 30.

Why you'd want them: To learn more about Kansas candidates seeking U.S. House and Senate seats.

Where you get the records: From the Federal Election Commission's Web site, www.fec.gov. Click on the "Campaign Finance Reports and Data" link. You can search in various ways, including by candidate, contribution and political action committee.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
