Wichita beat Bradley 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) in Peoria, Ill. Emily Stockman and Kim Wadsworth had 9 kills apiece for the Shockers, who bounced back from Friday night's five-set loss to first-place Northern Iowa. Bradley is winless in the Missouri Valley Conference.
* Sophomore Allison Mayfield's 14 kills led Kansas to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 sweep of Kansas State in Manhattan. The victory gave KU coach Ray Bechard 900 career wins.
* Emporia State, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, swept Fort Hays State 25-17, 25-19, 25-14 behind 37 assists and 12 digs from reigning MIAA player of the year Ting Liu. Brittany Miller led Esu with 14 kills and five blocks while Arica Shepard added 12 kills and 16 digs.
* Carol Logato led No. 17 Hutchinson Community College with nine kills in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 sweep of Pratt at Hutchinson.
Cross country
Wichita State's Marius Sava finished 17th in the NCAA Pre-National open meet in Terre Haute, Ind.. Sava, a junior, ran the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 48 seconds. The WSU women finished 17th in the 37-team field in the white race. The WSU men did not compete as a team. Tonya Nero led the WSU women with a 36th place finish and a time of 21:25 in the 6-kilometer race. Leah Thompson finished 38th with a time of 21:28. Rachel York finished 107th with a time of 22:26 and Irene Kosgei finished 128th with a time of 22:26. Olivia Martinez placed 135th with a time of 22:29. For the men, Trace Kendrick placed 34th (26:16), followed by Scott Ufford (62nd, 26:59), Jake Stecklein (68th, 27:17) and Josh Richardson (75th, 27:24).
Basketball
Former Wichita State player Jacie Hoyt will miss the season after suffering a knee injury in practice for Fort Hays State. Hoyt, from Hoxie, transferred to Fort Hays State last spring. She will have one season of eligibility remaining in 2010-2011.
* Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love fractured a bone in his left hand during a 94-90 preseason loss to the Chicago Bulls and will likely miss about six weeks. Love led all rookies and ranked ninth in the NBA in rebounding at 9.1 per game last season, setting a team rookie record with 734 rebounds.
Baseball
Wichita State freshman T.J. McGreevy threw five shutout innings to help Black defeat Gold 6-2 in the opening game of the fall series. Erik Harbutz went 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Black. Ryan Jones led Gold with two RBIs. McGreevy allowed three hits and struck out two. The teams resume the series at 2 p.m. today at Eck Stadium. Admission is a can of food for the Kansas Food Bank.
SOCCER
Washburn's Keeley Lambeth scored the winning goal for the Ichabods off an assist from Maize product Tia Stovall in a 1-0 win over Northwest Missouri in Topeka.
FOOTBALL
Sioux Falls moved up two classes of competition Saturday, but came away with the same result in running its winning streak to 21 games.
Lorenzo Brown passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the No. 1-ranked and defending NAIA national champions won 28-13 over North Dakota, a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.
