The Goddard school board has asked superintendent Charles Edmonds to postpone his retirement for one year so he can continue to lead the suburban school district through tough budget years and the opening of new schools.
Edmonds announced earlier this year he would retire at the end of this school year, but the board on Tuesday pushed back that date to June 30, 2011.
Edmonds accepted the extended contract on the condition he receive a 1.25 percent salary reduction, according to a news release from the school district.
"I know how difficult the budget situation is going to be, and as the district leader, I wanted to set the example," he said in a statement.
Staff changes will be announced by the end of this year in anticipation of opening two schools that are part of the district's bond plan, Edmonds said.
He said the district will continue to search for a replacement for assistant superintendent Rod Dietz, who is still retiring at the end of the school year.
The school board will keep the application process for Edmonds' job open, but members will meet soon to revise the search timeline, according to the release.
