Sam Muyskens ousted from Inter-Faith Ministries

Inter-Faith Ministries of Wichita removed Sam Muyskens as executive director emeritus last week.

Muyskens said Tuesday that his position had been eliminated on Oct. 5. He also confirmed reports that he was asked to turn in his key and cell phone and was ushered out the door with no explanation.

"I was handed a letter," Muyskens said. The letter said his position had been eliminated, he said.

Muyskens served as executive director for 17 years at the charity that runs a homeless shelter and other services for the poor and disabled. After retiring earlier this year, he served in the emeritus position for 39 days.

Originally, Muyskens was to stay on and help with the transition for new director Sue Castile, who began her duties Sept. 1.

Cathy Northrup, pastor at First Presbyterian Church and president of the Inter-Faith board, said Muyskens' presence made Castile's transition more difficult.

"The executive committee met and made a prayerful decision," Northrup said. "It was a very difficult decision."

Muyskens said he wished the best for the 123-year-old coalition of Wichita churches.

"What is more relevant to me is that Inter-Faith Ministries continue to grow and be responsive to the faith community," he said.
