SAUGER

Stizostedion canadense

Sauger were once native to several Kansas river systems and have done well where stocked in several northeast Kansas lakes.

They're better adapted to the murky water and high flow-through such lakes endure during periods of heavy rains.

Sauger can be distinguished from walleye by the circular spots on their dorsal fins, pronounced blotches extending below the lateral line and the absence of a walleye's white dot at the bottom of their tail.

They also have rough scales on their cheeks.
