Young arrested over missed hearing

Former East High basketball standout Korleone Young was arrested this week on a warrant charging him with failing to attend a court-ordered hearing in a domestic relations case.

Jail records show that Young, who skipped college to enter the NBA Draft in 1998, was arrested by Wichita police at 17th and Grove on Monday on a warrant issued after he missed a January court date.

Court records show that the hearing, which was over child support payments, arose from a paternity suit filed against Young in 2000.

Joni Wilson-Colby, a manager for the Sedgwick County court trustee's office, said Young, 30, is scheduled to appear on Monday in Sedgwick County District Court. He is being held on $25,000 bond.

Young, a 6-foot-7 forward, transferred for his final year of high school basketball to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., then was a second-round selection by the Detroit Pistons in the 1998 NBA Draft, but appeared in only three games.

From 1999 to 2006, he played professionally in lower-level American leagues and in Australia, Russia, China and Israel.
