Basketball


Wichita State's game against Creighton will be played at 1 p.m. on Jan. 9 and be televised on ESPNU. The time of the game had not been determined when the scheduled was announced last month.

* The Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever have a tough act to follow tonight in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. Phoenix's 120-116 overtime victory in Game 1 Tuesday night set a WNBA record for points in a game. "It was huge shot after shot," Mercury guard Diana Taurasi said. "It was exciting to be in. It was really exciting to be in. I haven't gotten a chance to see it and I don't want to see it. I always say with games like that, I don't want to go back and watch them."

Indiana coach Lin Dunn would like to see a bit more defense, and maybe not quite so much speed, from a team that ranked third in fewest points allowed in the regular season.

"I graded our defense a C-plus," she said. "I didn't think we did well some of the things we usually do well."

Football

Fort Scott moved to No. 3 in the NJCAA football poll on the strength of its 31-0 victory over Hutchinson last Saturday. Fort Scott, ranked sixth last week, jumped over Butler. The Grizzlies moved up a spot to No. 4 this week, while Hutchinson fell to No. 13. Blinn (Texas) and Navarro (Texas) remained Nos. 1 and 2. Butler plays at Hutchinson this week.

* The teams are set, one from the Big East, one from the Big 12. The site: The new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium. Now all the new bowl game in the Bronx needs is a name before its debut in December 2010. The leagues and the New York Yankees have a four-year agreement in place, running through the 2013 season. The payout to each team will be about $2 million.

* Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington says he'll undergo surgery to repair his season-ending shoulder injury, and he'll start rehabilitation before deciding whether to retire or continue his NFL career. With Pennington out, Chad Henne will make his first NFL start Sunday.

* A Nevada judge has denied motions by lawyers for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to dismiss a civil lawsuit filed by a Lake Tahoe casino worker who alleges he raped her in his penthouse suite in 2008.

Cross country

The Friend women's team is ranked 20th in the latest NAIA poll. Friends won the Tabor Invitational last Saturday, led by sophomore Jordan Arnold's first-place finish.

Volleyball

Kansas beat Colorado 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) in Lawrence. KU senior Paige Mazour had 13 kills and a .550 attack percentage.

* Fort Hays State beat Newman 3-1 in Wichita.

* Hutchinson sophomore Bailea Phelan was chosen NJCAA player of the week. Phelan averaged 4.69 kills per set and had a .329 hitting percentage in four matches at the Caribbean Tan Invitational.

Golf

Wichita State junior Adin Stromgren was chosen Missouri Valley Conference golfer of the week. Stromgren tied for 10th at the Marilyn Smith Sunflower Invitational.

Soccer

Sade Humphrey and Cindy Benitez scored 3 goals apiece as 12th-ranked Butler beat Dodge City 15-2. The Grizzlies improved to 9-3-1, 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.

* Maize's Tia Stovall scored the only goal in Washburn's 1-0 victory over Rockhurst. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman.

Hockey

A bankruptcy judge has rejected both bids to buy the Phoenix Coyotes. Judge Redfield T. Baum turned down the offers of Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie and the NHL in a 31-page ruling on Wednesday. However, he left the door open for the NHL to buy the team if it amends its offer to provide more money to Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes and former coach Wayne Gretzky.
