WICHITA — A 33-year-old Wichita man has been arrested in connection with the theft of sports memorabilia from Players sports bar in late July, police said today.
While some of the stolen items have been recovered and returned to the sports bar, Capt. Darrell Haynes said, two baseballs autographed by Babe Ruth are still missing.
"I don't know that we will ever get them returned," Haynes said.
Brandon Van Ness, whom police had identified as a suspect in the case only a few days after the break-in, was arrested Tuesday at Seneca Street Bar and Grill after a patron called police. Officers had been circulating photos of Van Ness, Haynes said, so the caller recognized him when he came into the bar.
Among the items stolen from display cases just inside the front entrance to the sports bar in the 6200 block of West 21st Street were a Mickey Mantle baseball card from his rookie year of 1952 and five rings _ including salesman's samples for Super Bowl IX and X.
