Why do we see egg-shaped clouds on the tail end of storms?

These clouds are called mammatus clouds and they are typical around big thunderstorms. There is often a significant amount of turbulence around thunderstorms, which is how those egg-shaped features appear. They are not dangerous, but when you see them, you can almost bet there is a strong storm in the area and you should move indoors. People often mistake mammatus clouds for funnels, but tornadoes don't come from these clouds because they are too high in the atmosphere.
