Most of the figures are for block-long segments between two intersecting streets. In some cases, such as those in which there is a bridge in the middle of a block, a block can have more than one segment. In cases where a street’s layout makes it impossible to assign a logical name to a segment, city engineers rely on an internal identification number to keep track of that segment.

What is the PCI? The pavement condition index is based on cracks, potholes and the smoothness of a stretch of roadway. A PCI below 50 means a road is failing. A PCI below 60 means a road has reached a critical point where deterioration accelerates. Dirt roads are assigned a PCI index of one. “EOP” in the data means “end of pavement.”

About this database: Information is from the city of Wichita. The city rates its roads on roughly a two-year cycle, so some of the information, particularly for areas east of Oliver Road, may not reflect recent changes. This data reflects conditions as of early February 2009. The road length and width measurements included are in feet.

For more information: If you want a pothole fixed, have a complaint about your street, or need help understanding what your PCI rating means, you can contact the maintenance division of the city of Wichita’s public works department at 316-268-4060.
