Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives. For recent You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: The retention schedule for records kept by state agencies and county governments.

Why you'd want it: To learn more about what records are kept by agencies and how long they must keep them.

Where you get the records: From the Kansas State Historical Society.

You can get the retention schedule online and also do a query to find out what records are kept. To do so, go to http://www.kshs.org/government/records/stategovt/stateretentionschedules.htm.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
