Wichita Eagle obituaries: Frequently asked questions

  • Published Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at 4:04 p.m.
  • Updated Monday, March 5, 2012, at 10:42 a.m.

If a funeral home or mortuary is not involved, may an individual place an obituary?

Yes. However, we would need the name of the crematory, funeral home or mortuary that assisted with arrangements for confirmation of death. If that is not possible, we would need a copy of the death certificate prior to publication.

How would I go about searching for an old obituary?

You may search Kansas.com archives dating back to 1984. If you are looking for something older than that you may contact with Wichita Public Library at 316-261-8500 or via its Web site, www.wichita.lib.ks.us. Or you may search the Kansas Historical Society via its Web site, www.kshs.org.

What is the cost of running an obituary?

To obtain pricing information, contact our obituary office at 316-268-6508 or obiteam@wichitaeagle.com.

What is your deadline for next day publication?

Our deadline is 4 p.m. central time every day for the following edition. Our office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sundays and holidays.

What is your policy regarding photos?

We can accommodate one photograph per obituary. Photos publish at roughly 0.8 inches by 1.2 inches, and they take up three lines of space. The photo provided may be any size as long as the face is at least ½ inch wide. If a photograph is out of focus, has a soft focus, is of inferior quality or was scanned, we cannot guarantee that it will reproduce well. Color photos are acceptable but will be converted to black and white for publication. If you are scanning and e-mailing a photo, we require that the resolution be at least 200dpi.

Do all obituaries appear online?

Free death notices appear in print only. Paid notices appear online for a full year and include an online guestbook.

You also have the option of enhancing the online obituary by adding extra text, adding up to 10 photos, audio and video clips. In order to take advantage of the enhanced version, you must provide an e-mail address. A password is then sent to your e-mail with instructions on how to make changes to the online version. This service is included with all paid obituary notices.

What constitutes a line?

There are approximately 40 characters per line. Each keystroke is a character; a character is a letter, number, space or punctuation mark.
