Weather to keep Greensburg volunteers out

Severe weather could threaten the Greensburg area today and tonight, so volunteers will not be permitted inside the decimated Kiowa County town.

Because about 95 percent of the town was damaged or destroyed by an EF5 tornado on the night of May 4, little shelter is available for residents and volunteers who are working to clean up debris and rebuild.

"The health and safety of the public is our primary concern, right now," Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, Kansas adjutant general, said in a statement Monday. "If severe weather seems imminent, the prudent thing to do is stay out of Greensburg and seek shelter until it's safe to return."
