Wichita police arrested a 43-year-old woman in a shooting early Friday that left her estranged husband in "very critical condition" with a gunshot wound to his head, a police official said.
The shooting was reported at 4:01 a.m. in the 12000 block of West 19th Street.
Later Friday, police identified the man who was shot as John Hazelton, 44, of Wichita.
Hazelton remained in "very critical condition" Friday afternoon, police Lt. Todd Ojile said.
Investigators have interviewed his wife, and she has been put in jail on suspicion of aggravated battery, police said.
Hazelton and his wife have been separated, and he was not living at the residence where the shooting occurred, Ojile said.
Ojile said detectives are still trying to determine what led to the shooting, but a police report said that the woman reported shooting her husband during an argument.
There had been no previous reports of domestic violence involving the couple, Ojile said.
They have been married for a long time and separated for a short period, he said.
Investigators have found no evidence of a forced entry into the home, and it appears Hazelton was unarmed, he said.
The shooting occurred upstairs while a teenage daughter was downstairs in the home, and she didn't see the shooting, Ojile said.
The man's wife called 911, he said.
